Nelson Phonics-in-a-Box 1

Deborah Foreman

Nelson Phonics-in-a-Box is a complete phonics-based solution for introducing students to the letter sounds of the English alphabet in a sequential, scaffolded and purposeful way. The series supports early development of blending, segmenting and manipulating skills, and reinforces phonemic awareness. Nelson Phonics-in-a-Box 1 introduces the 26 alphabet letters (graphemes) that are used to construct the 44 common speech sounds (phonemes) that make up the English language. Box 1 focuses on the letter–sound relationships of initial letter sounds, in five small collections of letters. These letter sets have been purposefully sequenced to enable students to build upon their phoneme–grapheme correspondences quickly, and to blend two and three phonemes together to make many simple VC (vowel-consonant) and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.
Box 1 includes:
– Alphabet Flashcards: for students to learn the sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet
– One-Word Readers: featuring words with the focus initial letter and a simple matching image
– Decodable Story Books: decodable stories for students to practise reading phoneme–grapheme correspondences, CVC words and high-frequency/sight words, and to build concepts about print skills. The books have simple and engaging storylines and illustrations, and support students to also make meaning while reading.
– Teacher’s Resource Book: a comprehensive guide for easily and successfully implementing the Nelson Phonics-in-a-Box program in the classroom. Includes accessible and easy-to-use lesson plans (based on the Gradual Release of Responsibility approach), assessment information and a QR code link to the letter sounds audio, on the Nelson Primary website.
