City of Light

Julia Lawrinson, Mark Jackson and Heather Potter (ill.)

On Monday 20 February, 1962, the people of Perth lit up their city overnight to acknowledge the special mission of American astronaut, John Glenn – the first American to orbit the Earth. In turn, Glenn observed that the city was visible from space, and Perth became known to the world as ‘The City of Light’.

The City of Light tells the story of two small children with one big idea; an idea that captured the imagination of an entire city. It is also a story about connection and how a community banded together to achieve a goal.
